What is asphalt paving?

Asphalt paving involves laying a bitumen-based surface on a prepared sub-base. Asphalt (also known as tarmac or bituminous concrete) is a mix of aggregates (gravel, sand) and bituminous binder, applied hot or cold depending on the requirements of the project.

Several types of asphalt are commonly used in Switzerland:

  • Hot-mix asphalt: the most common for driveways and car parks. Applied at 140 °C to 180 °C, it offers high mechanical resistance and a lifespan of 15 to 25 years.
  • Cold-mix asphalt: used mainly for spot repairs or small surfaces. Easier to lay, it is suited to footpaths and low-traffic areas.
  • Porous asphalt: designed to let rainwater pass through and reduce run-off. Recommended in Swiss municipalities that require stormwater management compliant with cantonal standards.
  • Coloured asphalt: available in red, ochre or grey, it allows the surface to blend aesthetically with your outdoor design.

Why hire a professional?

Laying asphalt requires specialised equipment — a paver, roller compactor and transport trucks — as well as technical expertise to ensure a uniform, long-lasting result. A qualified professional guarantees:

  • Proper ground preparation: excavation, installation of a compacted gravel base layer and grading for water drainage.
  • Compliance with Swiss standards: surfacing work must often meet municipal requirements, particularly regarding permeability and connection to drainage systems.
  • Best-practice installation: correct laying temperature, layer thickness (typically 5 to 8 cm for residential use) and optimal compaction.
  • Warranty on the work: Swiss companies generally provide a 2 to 5-year guarantee on the installation.
  • Coordination with other projects: if you are simultaneously planning a gate, a carport or a fence, a professional coordinates the work so that foundations, kerbs and levels all align perfectly.
  • Stormwater management: in Switzerland, many municipalities impose strict standards on surface water infiltration. A specialist advises you on the choice between standard and porous asphalt, and correctly sizes the gradients and drainage to comply with cantonal regulations.

Seasonal calendar for Switzerland

Asphalt laying is closely tied to weather conditions. Here is the recommended calendar for Switzerland:

  • March: work can begin on the lowlands (Lake Geneva region, Plateau) once daytime temperatures regularly exceed 10 °C. This is a good time to request quotes and schedule your project.
  • April – May: the ideal period to start work. Temperatures are favourable, days are growing longer and companies still have availability before peak season.
  • June – August: peak season for asphalt paving. Conditions are optimal (dry ground, high temperatures), but lead times may be longer due to strong demand. Book your project well in advance.
  • September – October: the last favourable window. Temperatures remain adequate on the lowlands and companies are often more available than in midsummer. Ideal if you want to combine with autumn landscaping work.
  • November – February: hot-mix asphalt work stops in most regions. Wet or frozen ground does not allow a quality installation. Use this period to obtain quotes and prepare your project. Cold-mix repairs remain possible in dry weather above 5 °C.

Altitude note: in the mountains (above 800 m), the usable season is shortened by roughly one month on each side. Count on a window from May to September for projects at altitude.

How it works

Step 1: Contact us

Fill in our form or call us in just a few minutes. Indicate the type of surface to be paved (driveway, car park, path), the approximate area and your preferences (standard, porous or coloured asphalt). The more precise your description, the more accurate the quote will be.

Step 2: We visit and provide a free quote

Our team visits your site to assess the terrain and your needs. We provide a detailed quote, with no obligation.

Step 3: We carry out the work

Our professionals handle the ground preparation and asphalt laying to the highest standards, delivering a durable, quality finish.

Prices and rates in Switzerland

Asphalt paving costs vary depending on the surface area, the type of asphalt chosen, the condition of the ground and the region. Here are indicative price ranges for Switzerland:

ServiceIndicative price (CHF/m²)
Hot-mix asphalt (residential driveway)65 – 120
Cold-mix asphalt (repair, small area)40 – 72
Porous asphalt80 – 145
Coloured asphalt90 – 160
Excavation and ground preparation25 – 48

These prices generally include supply and installation but not excavation or removal of existing materials, which are charged separately. For a 40 m² driveway, expect a total cost of CHF 2,600 to CHF 4,800 all-inclusive. A personalised quote will give you an exact figure for your situation.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best season for asphalt paving in Switzerland?

Hot-mix asphalt requires outdoor temperatures of at least 10 °C. In Switzerland, the ideal season runs from April to October. Some contractors accept projects in March or November depending on altitude and weather conditions.

How long does an asphalt surface last?

A well-laid asphalt surface on a properly prepared base has a lifespan of 15 to 25 years. Maintenance is minimal: occasional cleaning and prompt sealing of any cracks are enough to extend its longevity.

Do I need a building permit to pave my driveway?

It depends on your municipality. In many cantons, resurfacing an existing area does not require a permit. However, creating a new impermeable surface may be subject to approval, particularly if it alters water drainage patterns. Your contractor can advise you on the local requirements.

Can I lay asphalt myself?

Cold-mix asphalt is available in bags at some DIY stores. However, the result will be significantly inferior to a professional installation in terms of both durability and appearance. For areas larger than a few square metres, hiring a specialist is strongly recommended.

What is the difference between tarmac and asphalt?

In everyday language, “tarmac” and “asphalt” are often used interchangeably. Technically, traditional tar (derived from coal) has not been used since the 1990s due to its toxicity. Modern surfaces are bituminous asphalt, made from petroleum-derived bitumen, which is less harmful. When you request “tarmac paving,” you will receive a bituminous asphalt surface that meets current standards.

Can new asphalt be laid over an existing surface?

In some cases, yes. If the old asphalt is structurally sound (no deep deformations or foundation problems), a new layer of 3 to 5 cm can be applied on top after surface milling. However, if the existing surface has significant cracking or subsidence, a full excavation is recommended to ensure the durability of the new surfacing. Your contractor will assess the condition of the existing ground and advise on the best approach.

Is porous asphalt compulsory in Switzerland?

There is no federal requirement, but many Swiss municipalities impose stormwater management measures for new impermeable surfaces. Depending on local regulations, you may need to install porous asphalt, provide an infiltration system or compensate with green surfaces elsewhere on your plot. These requirements are part of Switzerland’s water protection policy. Check with your municipality before starting work.
